Fry's Readability Graph
A staple of reading instruction classes, the Fry readability formula allows you to estimate the reading level of a piece of writing by counting words, syllables, and sentences. This is really better for an older reader, not one under 6 years old.
Although this site by Kathy Schrock has a little more educationalese than we like, nevertheless, it is very helpful in you getting the bigger picture about reading levels and the way they are measured. Also, she list sites that you can search leveled readers on to get an idea of where your child is.
